A few weekends ago I got to explore a new-to-me winter trail around one of my favorite mountains. While the views were amazing, I spent a fair bit of time looking at the ground. One of my favorite parts of winter is searching for animal tracks and I derive particular joy from tiny rodent prints that look like zippers transecting the vast white landscape. The natural world can feel so quiet and dormant in winter, but these tracks are a reminder of all the life running around right under our noses.
